Origins of Hypnotherapy

The word "hypnos"  is from the Greek and means sleep.

Hypnosis was used for therapeutic purposes as early as 1000 B.C. when Egyptian priests lulled worshipers into a trance and suggested they be cured of their ailments and often they were!

In 1050 A.D., Edward the Confessor of the English monarchy practiced the use of “the royal touch” in order to heal the afflicted, thus the practice of “laying on hands” while suggesting that healing occur in the body became accepted by the public. The power of suggestion through positive thinking, prayer and a comforting touch from a healer has had astounding results known the world over!

During the late 1700’s and early 1800’s in France, the nobility clamored for the hypnotherapy treatments of Franz Anton Mesmer. As a result of his successful practice, the term “mesmerized” was born.

In World War II, physicians in the field who ran out of anesthetics and pain medicine often resorted to the use of placebos in order to treat pain and injury. It worked half of the time! Have you heard of the “placebo effect?” It is a well documented phenomenon in medicine. The belief of relief ... the expectation of healing ... this aides in all therapeutic interventions.

In 1958, the American Medical Association approved the use of hypnosis as a treatment modality in the U.S.A. Today, it is widely used in many fields and has many names: visualization, guided imagery, meditation, and relaxation therapy.

Hypnotherapy works because all hypnosis is self hypnosis. You have the power to change. It is inside your mind. Are you ready for it?
